We may pine for spring, but to get to the flowers and warm breezes, we have to go through mud season. That’s pretty much March: rain, which equals mud; melting snow, which equals more mud.

Instead of hiding inside, lean into the month with the antidote to dreary — adorable, cheery and even chic rain gear. Here are some of my favorite rainy-day looks, from sleek and sophisticated to cute and completely charming.

A fun and easy poncho: Gray mornings get noticeably less so once you reach for a fun game changer like the Black Polka Rain Poncho ($89 on us.rainkiss.online). Its playful print mixes dark tones of black and gray, but in a big-format, classic print. The fact that this piece is a poncho makes it even better—its waterproof, taped seams line an easily worn shape that fits over suits, sweaters and so on. Wear with it: A big shot of color, such as Salvatore Ferragamo’s Gancini PVC Rainboots ($595 on saksfifthavenue.com), in a hot, hot pink.

Li’l Red Riding Hood saves the day: If the fabled protagonist had been into flowers, she’d have worn the Red Waterproof Hooded Swing Coat ($389 on wolfandbadger.com) by RainSisters. Its unique pattern of bright crimson covered in peonies and fit-and-flare silhouette is feminine and strong at once. Designed by RainSisters — a cool Latvian rain gear company — it’s got hidden pockets and an oversized and adjustable hood. Wear with it: the Yellow Membrane Bucket Hat ($29 on etsy.com); the handmade number is lightweight and breathable but waterproof.

A Mackintosh to brighten fog and drizzle: Every season, Boden releases out some of the loveliest and most charming raincoat designs, and this year they’ve delivered yet again with The Morris Waterproof Mac ($198 on bodenusa.com). The fully waterproof design boasts a smooth snap-and-zip front  and an internal pocket for your phone. Of course I love that it’s at least partially made from recycled materials, and is fully waterproof with taped seams and fully lined. Both of the company’s two prints are equally covetable: The Floret Cluster, with its interior navy blue lining is feminine and cheery. Meanwhile, the Navy and Ochre Colourblock is a spectacular graphic design statement, in bright red trim and mustard-yellow sleeves on a deep blue. Wear with it: An exact match in Rain Hat in Floret Cluster ($40 on bodenusa.com), so you’ll be coming up roses (and petunias and daisies), head to toe.

White and glossy: The mod-to-its-core Hooded Snap-Front Long Rain Slicker Coat ($395 on neimanmarcus.com) is unapologetically stylish. Its subtle hood and black snaps are pure monochromatic cool. Not surprisingly, it was made at the hands of rainwear guru Jane Lipman Post, the designer turning heads for injecting major chic into rainwear design. Wear with it: Adidas by Stella McCartney Bucket Hat ($50 on adidas.com). The brim extends low with a sassy swoop, looking cool while blocking showers, and saving the planet (it’s made with at least 60% recycled materials) while also saving your hair from the rain.
