There are endless benefits of painting a fence in your outdoor space. Introducing a new color, or repairing an old-looking fence is an economical way to refresh your surroundings.

The garden fence is both a stylish and practical part of your front yard or backyard, and it also provides privacy and weather protection. Whether you are painting an old wooden fence with a roller or using a paint sprayer to give new life to your fence for quick results, knowing how to paint a fence yourself is one of the easiest DIY projects. The key to getting professional results is preparation. Take a look at our five-step operation method.

Chris Bonnett of GardeningExpress.co.uk said: “Whether your fence is brand new or old, it’s always good to repaint it. No matter how you choose to paint the fence, this will completely restore you. Garden. This is a very underrated way of improving the house."

When painting fences, you will want to use the best exterior wood paints, because these paints are specially formulated to protect wood from natural factors. We like to use acrylic paint because it is more durable and has a variety of colors to choose from. You can find oil-based paints, they can provide very gorgeous finishes, but it's best to leave it to the experts because they are more difficult to use, require multiple layers, and they don't provide the same level of protection as acrylic.

First, you need to remove and protect anything on or around the fence. This could be garden plants, terrace flooring or furniture. Cut down any bushes or trees that are in contact with the fence, because paint toxins are not good for them. Or you can fix them back carefully, and they should bounce back quickly when you are done. Then remove what you can remove and cover anything else with plastic sheeting or old sheets. You can cover these areas, or try fixing the sheets under the fence to prevent paint from dripping.

This is all the preparations. Make sure that your fence does not have any old nails, decorations or screws. Rough areas are the key to a clean paint finish. You can then manually remove cobwebs and dirt, or, if you have more work on your hands, you can use an electric washing machine with water and detergent/bleach-consider removing mold etc.

If you are on a painted fence with peeling paint, you need to lightly sand it to get an even surface finish.

Bonnet said: “If you have a brand new fence, they are usually pre-treated, so all you need to do before painting is to make sure your panels are clean and dry. However, the old fence may need to be sanded to help remove the previous one. Paint the layer for a more uniform effect."

Primer must be used when painting the fence. Some people may want to skip this step to get faster DIY work, but the truth is that the primer will prohibit any mold growth and ensure professional completion. 'Adding a primer before painting is a good way to prevent moldy fences. It can also act as a binder for the paint you are using, providing a vibrant and long-lasting finish.

Use your paint brush or roller to apply a coat of primer. Try not to spread it too thick, so as not to drip or run to the other side of the fence. A few thin layers are more effective than a dirty and messy layer. Let it dry thoroughly according to the paint can's instructions-this usually takes a few hours.

Important: Even if you use a roller or spray gun, keep the best paint brush so that you can pick up any drips quickly.

Now it's time to paint some colors. If you are painting a fence with vertical panels, use a brush, roller or paint sprayer vertically. Similarly, for horizontal panels, as the direction of the texture advances, it will produce smoother results and more comprehensive coverage. You can apply paint more freely, making sure you actually use it to make it penetrate the wood. Paint from top to bottom and handle it carefully, especially the lap board, because dripping water can easily drip to the other side. Check the hidden areas near the post to see if you haven't missed any places.

Bonnett agrees, “The best way to paint the fence is to paint from top to bottom and follow the direction of the panel with your paint strokes. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of paint when doing this, just make sure all areas of the fence are painted the same Coating."

High-quality fence paint should only require one coat, but if the surface looks a little mottled, please apply it again. Let it dry completely, this may take up to 12 hours-check the can!

After completion, when the paint is completely dry, you can remove any protective layer and put the greenery and any other displaced items back in their original positions.

Start cleaning the brushes and rollers to make sure the paint comes off easily and wipe all the plastic cloths, and store them for the next DIY use. If there is paint in the jar, please indicate on the label when you use it, and make sure the lid is clean (ish) and tightened to prevent oxidation. Store it in a place away from direct sunlight and away from the floor.

As you might guess, spring and summer are the best times of the year to draw fences. You need to choose a sunny, dry weather with a temperature higher than 5°C/40F, because the temperature below this temperature will prevent the paint from drying. Having said that, you also want to make sure to paint in the shade, because direct sunlight can cause the wood or metal to be too hot, which means that the paint dries too fast and prevents it from being absorbed into the wood grain, which helps to protect the wood grain first of all Fence.

Before starting work, try to wait until the fence is in the shade-if the wood is too hot, the paint will dry too quickly and there will be no chance to properly dip into the wood. Only by allowing the paint to soak in, the paint can completely protect the wood.

To speed up this process, you can invest in a spray paint gun, which can cover the entire fence surface in a few minutes, or even quickly.

"If you have the ability to spray on an electric paint spray gun, then this is definitely the most effective way to get the job done. It will also give you a perfect and even paint coat. This is not to say using paint brushes and old-fashioned methods It doesn’t work, it just takes a little more time. Painting in this way has some healing effects! Or, you can use a paint roller to paint all the flat parts of the panel. This is a less accurate method, But it helps to get the job done faster," Bonnett added.

If your fence is in good condition, then you don't need to spend too much time cleaning and preparing, which will take time to paint the fence yourself. As mentioned earlier, although it is tempting to skip the entry, we strongly recommend that you do not!
