Escanaba-A Rapid River man was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for drug charges and leading the police in a high-speed hunt.

Dustin Richard Giesel, 34, from Rapid River, was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison on November 18, 2021, because he pleaded guilty to: delivering/manufacturing methyl Amphetamine, police officer-escape, level 3, 4 counts police officer-assault/resist/obstruct, and operate while drunk. Giselle was sentenced to a fourth habitual offender.

On September 30, 2020, officials from the Public Safety Department of Escanaba intercepted vehicles operated by Giesel in the city of Escanaba. After confirming the identity of Giesel and the passengers, when Giesel fled the traffic station, the officers were returning to the patrol car and almost run over the officers' feet. Following a chase, Giselle drove through the city of Escanaba at a speed of more than 75 miles per hour. Giselle crashed into the fence at the North Trailer Park and finally fell onto the train tracks. The vehicle eventually got stuck on the track, and Gisell ran away on foot. Officials from the Escanaba Public Safety Department and @deltacountysheriff pursued Giesel and found him in the bushes. Giesel refused to be arrested by multiple officers, leading to K9 being used and Taser deployed. The police finally controlled Gisell, but he refused to get out of the bushes on his own and asked the police to carry him out of the area. A subsequent search of the vehicle involved found a plastic container containing multiple bags of white powdery substance. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, and the plastic container had Giesel fingerprints.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the Delta County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, Delta County Central Dispatch and Rampart EMS in the investigation.
