Huntsville (Walker County)-The Texas State University System Board of Directors is scheduled to meet in Huntsville on November 18 to approve the design and development documents for the renovation and expansion of the recreational sports center.

The Recreation Sports Center/Health and Kinesiology Center is located on the main campus of Sam Houston University, and the project site is adjacent to the east side of the building. The new project will be located in the parking lot Z1-17.

Refurbishment and expansion projects include 9,100 gross square feet extension and 21,575 gross square feet renovation of the existing leisure sports center/health and kinesiology center building. The addition will accommodate a basketball court specified by the NCAA, with two cross courts and spectator seats.

The refurbishment includes 11,450 GSF for the north entrance and 8,500 GSF for squash, and 1,625 GSF for the gym lobby, outdoor storage and ramps.

Once the board of directors accepts the design documents, the construction documents phase begins (November 19). The design team is expected to complete the construction documents before December 23.

The notice of the construction phase is scheduled to be issued on January 31, 2022. Sam Houston University plans to be basically completed by mid-July 2023.

The total estimated construction cost is US$7,618,000. Professional service fees, furniture and equipment, and other miscellaneous expenses (including public art) brought the total project cost to US$9.5 million.

The area immediately adjacent to the addition will be refurbished to create a new lobby space and toilets can be used after get off work. The north entrance hall and office of the existing building will be renovated to create an updated lobby and new aerobics studio, and the renovation of the existing dance studio will create a new functional training/aerobics studio .

The six existing squash courts will be transformed into two multi-purpose rooms, an outdoor equipment storage room and an auxiliary exit channel.

The exterior building is a combination of bricks, metal panels, glass storefronts and a glass curtain wall system, connected to the steel frame structure. The design of the exterior wall and glass complies with energy regulations and budget requirements.

Traditional wall structures of bricks and metal panels, insulation, vapor barriers, and sheaths on CMU or metal studs are used as economical options to match existing buildings and meet energy/budget requirements. The roof is composed of a single-layer PVC film on the covering board and rigid insulating material on the metal deck.

The scope of civil works includes demolition, paving, leveling, drainage and public facilities, and serves the proposed reconstruction and expansion as needed. It also includes paving, leveling and drainage to solve the shortcomings of external barrier-free routes.
