University of Derby research ranks our best 200 businesses

Reaching the top is difficult - however, staying there is even harder.

The same could be said for the world of business. No matter what sector you operate in, you cannot afford to rest on your laurels.

Last year, the Derby Telegraph published its first ever list of the Top 200 businesses in Derby and Derbyshire.

That league table lifted the lid on the biggest contributors to our economy - the companies driving us forward, creating and supporting jobs.

It also showed that Derbyshire is home to a number of world-class firms.

This year, we have once again teamed up with the University of Derby to compile a league table of those firms who are leading from the front.

And for the first time, we are able to draw comparisons with last year’s list.

Looking through the 2018 league table, which is sponsored by Champions UK plc, it is encouraging to see that many of our ‘big-hitters’ are still up there.

But what is perhaps even more heartening is seeing the firms who have improved upon last year’s ranking - not to mention the number of new entries, proving that we have strength in depth.

All of this has been achieved against a challenging backdrop. Twelve months ago, we were talking about the uncertainty being caused by Brexit. Today, we are still talking about it.

Hopefully, come the end of March we will have a trading agreement in place with the EU that is manageable for all our key businesses.

However, while having a contingency plan up their sleeves, many companies have not been waiting for Brexit to happen. They have been getting on with the job in hand and excelling.

As you will see from the following list, both the city and county are home to some impressive names.

Once more, academics from the university’s Derby Management School have used publicly available information, including data from Companies House, to rank the top 200 private sector, active businesses with registered offices in Derby and Derbyshire on turnover.

The Top 200 underscores the depth of commercial talent on our doorstep - and all of the companies included deserve our congratulations.
